Chichester - West Sussex : Fresh Air And Stunning Views
Being lucky to have a coast and a river, this gem of a city is a magnet for historians, bird watchers, sailors and photographers a like. Chichester - West Sussex, city of ancient secrets of the Iron Age, Romans, Middle ages, to name a few. You will find her in South East England. It was regarded by the Romans as a very good vantage point to build a settlement. Being a bishopric territory, it boasts a beautifully crafted cathedral dated back to the 12th century.
Being a historical town with a coast and harbor, the locals have managed to use these features by building a thriving tourist industry around it. The Northshore shipyard is home to the famous Fish and Southerly sailing yachts which are meticulously crafted by dedicated yacht builders.
Look out for the 1075 cathedral commissioned by none other than William the Conqueror. It has marvelous stained windows and really magnificent masonry. It also has a bell tower oddly standing a few meters away from the main building.
If churches are your interest, you will have plenty of opportunity to visit an array of buildings. From St. Richard's Roman Catholic to the five Churches of England, not even mentioning the nine other denominations who equally have wonderful buildings to visit. You will probably stumble upon the ruins of a Roman Amphitheater which is unfortunately mostly covered by ground in a park. The bank's of the amphitheater however is still evident.
If you stand in the dead center of town you will be under a domed structure called the Chichester Cross. If is on the place where the original Butter Market was held for people selling goods and foods way back in 1808. Take a view photos as it is sure to be a good conversation topic in future.
The famous "walk the wall" route is a must do when visiting the city. It was built by the Romans around the third century AD, alas the stone you see today is of medieval times, but kept on the exact foundations of the original Roman wall. So take a stroll around the wall and stop on the many vantage points it has. The view is stunning and well worth the effort. The wall spans a mile and a half circumference and it takes only a hour or so to complete.
